The Halal Sourcing Partnership Program (HSPP) is an initiative by Halal Development Corporation Berhad (HDC) to increase the competitiveness of halal products offered to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia.
There are four scopes of facilitation offered to selected SMEs. which are international certifications (HACCP/ISO 22000), digital branding, product packaging, and the latest, training and development for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting and compliance.
For HSPP’s international certification facilitation, the recipients were assisted in securing the all-important Hazards Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and ISO 22000 certifications, an integral export requirement in many countries.
The Success Stories of HSPP: International Certification Facilitation
For Ambang Dorongan Sdn Bhd, a halal-certified frozen traditional pastries manufacturer, assistance from HSPP’s facilitation for international certification enabled the company to secure the HACCP certification within three months. This allowed the company to meet buyers’ demands and expand its international presence to Cambodia and Hong Kong.
Madam Way Food Supplies Sdn Bhd, a halal-certified producer of sauces, pastes, seasonings, snacks and pickled foods, the decision to implement HACCP under HDC’s HSPP proved crucial, as it boosted customer confidence, increasing sales and opening new opportunities with larger multinational corporations.
Another SME that has benefited from HSPP’s international certification assistance is Mayralab (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, a producer of premium flavoured sauces, powders and syrups. The decision to join HDC’s HSPP program and secure the HACCP certification has certainly boosted investors’ confidence, allowing the company to expand their export market to over 10 countries worldwide, including Iran and Lebanon, with more monthly orders secured and significant sales growth achieved.
Culvita Sdn Bhd, a leader in premium probiotic foods and beverages, has also boosted its global growth, thanks to support from HSPP. With their facilitation, Culvita managed to secure the HACCP certification, paving for successful exports to Singapore, Mauritius, Hong Kong, Cambodia, and France, with plans to expand to even more countries.
Packaging Revamp Facilitation
Under the Halal Sourcing Partnership Program (HSPP), 18 SME companies were selected for product development – packaging support facilitation in 2023. One notable beneficiary is IANA Corporation Sdn Bhd, a Sarawak-based manufacturer specializing in premium pastry products. Thanks to the packaging facilitation provided by HSPP, IANA has made significant advancements in the global market. The program has enabled them to enhance their packaging designs, aligning with consumer preferences and market trends, which has led to increased visibility and sales of their products on an international scale.
Another SME that benefited from HSPP’s packaging support is Gelatomio Production Sdn Bhd, a leading halal gelato manufacturer that received packaging and labelling assistance under HSPP. With HSPP’s assistance, Gelatomio revamped its packaging and labelling, improving both attractiveness and compliance, enhancing the brand’s global appeal and reducing the rate of spoilage. With the improved packaging, the company successfully exported to Hong Kong and received new orders from Mydin Hypermarket.
Digital Branding Support
Through HSPP’s Digital Branding facilitation, two halal SME producers significantly enhanced their product visibility and secured increased orders from both local and international buyers by the end of the program.
Premium mineral water brand Bubbles O2 for instance, has seen demand for their product triple since Q4 2023, following digital branding support from HSPP. The appointed service provider’s team worked closely with Bubbles O2’s marketing team to coach on ways to optimise their online campaigns and target a broader audience effectively to boost the brand’s visibility and online sales channels.
Nuri Enterprises, a manufacturer of halal-certified beverages and ready-to-eat meals under the brand name Nureys, also gained similar results. Facing challenges including limited brand exposure, high marketing costs and limited customer interactions, the company’s decision to turn to HSPP for support proved correct when it resulted in a marked increase in brand awareness and gaining more followers on social media.
With HSPP’s coaching, the company managed to target specific customer segments more effectively and has secured new buyers like Kart Food and Maslee Express, and has entered new markets including to USA and Singapore.
